Beginnings and Endings

My parents' wedding portrait, c. 1955

I won't be around much over the next week.

Things are in flux.

Things beginning and things ending.

My father in law and his long time lady friend got married in a surprise ceremony yesterday. So surprise, they didn't even tell us about it when we were visiting them for our annual holiday 2 weeks ago. I wish we had known. We would have come to celebrate with them. This life is too short to pass up any opportunity to celebrate with the ones you love.

I'm flying out of town tomorrow.

My mother is very ill. Likely at the end of her days.

It was a conspiracy of life--reasons that at the time felt justified, but now feel trivial--I didn't spend nearly as much time with my parents in the past several years as I wanted to. My children missed out on seeing their grandparents regularly. This is something I will always regret.

My mother has been drifting away for several years now.

I miss her, terribly. I think I always will.

  2. Which was exactly why we didn't tell anyone about the wedding. We didn't want anyone to spend the money or time to schlepp to Rock Hall....we didn't want any real hullabaloo! We didn't want any gifts! We just wanted a quiet, brief ceremony in our back yard. We'll celebrate, I promise, the next time we see you! I thought keeping it a secret was the right thing to do. Apparently, I pissed everyone off! Well, you know what they say about good intentions!

Our hearts are with you as you face what I know is difficult in FL. I don't even remember my mother and I've missed her my whole life! I hope you will cherish the good memories and let the difficult ones go. Let us know what, if anything, we can do to help!
