Captured

I tend to blog primarily about writing and the writing process, but every once in a while, something about my personal life shoehorns its way in. This is one of those times.

The photo is of me and my wonderful partner-in-crime, taken this past autumn at the Mt. Auburn cemetery in Cambridge, MA. It is one of my favorite places to walk near where I live. Strangely enough, I find cemeteries quite life affirming and this one is especially beautiful. It was designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, the designer of NYC's central park. From the top of the tower built on a hill at its heart, you can see a 360 degree view of Boston and its surroundings. On a bright fall day, the colors are spectacular.

The photo was a candid shot, taken by our lovely exchange student from Krygysztan. (She brought me the fabulous hat I'm wearing in the photo.)

I am no photographer, but I know enough about the art to realize that she captured something quite rare here. The story of a relationship is written in this photograph and I know I will always treasure it. My husband and I have been married for over 20 years. We share a deep and abiding love, respect, and friendship. I can see all of that and more in this picture.

I think you can pose for a thousand photos and not get to the core of a relationship as fully as this casual snapshot captured.

I am so grateful that we went on that walk and that our lovely N. was able to see us so fully through her camera lens and her eyes.
