Virtual Workshop Week: Poetry--tools for the novelist

Lynn Viehl, aka paperback writer, holds a series of virtual workshops during the week of RWA. She calls them 'LB&LI' (Left Behind and Loving It). She invites other writers to participate in giving virtual workshop on their blogs. Last year, I did a workshop on using a wiki to organize your novel. This year, I'll be talking about using poetry and poetic techniques useful for novelists.

Tune in each day this week as I present different poetic tools with examples of how to use them in your own writing.

Monday: Verbs Rule, Adjectives Drool
Tuesday: The Comparison--metaphor and simile
Wednesday: The Forgotten Senses
Thursday: Sound Effects--consonance, assonance, alliteration
Friday: Look for the Music--assess your prose

From the comments in each day's workshop, one random winner will receive a private critique of a poem or a page from their manuscript of choice, using the tools from the entire workshop. (Winners will be chosen on saturday, after the last workshop segment.)

For references, this workshop series is expanded from "Punch up your Prose with Poetry," first published in Vision: A Resource for Writers.
